About the Wine

This is one of the most collectable and iconic wines in the country. Phillip Jones only makes this wine in exceptional years, from the oldest, lowest-yielding vines on the Bass Phillip Gippsland estate.

A wine of power and maddening complexity. Something that will not hit its full stride for decades to come. The biggest statement Pinot Noir from anywhere in Australia and an incredibly rare one at that. This is the full Bass Phillip experience, with all its decadent grandeur on full display.

Given time and patience, the 2015 vintage maybe one of the great wines of its generation.

About Bass Phillip

The great Bass Phillip Estate is one of Australia’s most iconic producers. For decades Phillip Jones has farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding one of Australia’s truly world class wines.

The Bass Phillip Pinot Noir is a benchmark wine, rightfully one of the most collected in the country. Jones’ wines are incredible. They are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar.

"The Big Boy of Australian Pinot Noir, and invariably very good, but given the choice of this or a Musigny, well, call me unpatriotic… That being said, small production, and equal to Grange or Hill of Grace, and cheaper. And on that basis, I’d prefer this. It’s all very confusing. Anyway, you have the coin, and want to spend it, or you do not. End of story. Dance of the seven veils kind of Pinot here, where the moral of the story is ‘be patient’. Lavish clove, cinnamon and biscuit oak, deep dark cherry fruit, fresh tilled earthiness, a certain ‘minerality’ and a dried rose perfume. It’s medium bodied, thickly and sumptuously tannic, ribbons of silk, throaty and earthy dark cherry flavours, pencilly oak drawing lines for the future, and a very long and minerally finish. Depth and intensity. Tension and drama. It ‘feels’ Grand Cru, if that makes any sense. Wait." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front
