It’s unreal, all tannin and darkness, fine, and yet arrogantly fresh. Wonderful.

About The Wine

The Aphelion Sagrantino is a robust red which deftly combines power with refinement.

Sagrantino is a grape revered for its notoriously rugged tannins and fruit intensity. Sensitive winemaking here by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes has seen the variety reigned into a place of exotic, spicy pleasure. It's a uniquely approachable version of the variety from Australian soil.

This received a rave 94 point review from the Wine Front's Mike Bennie who called it simply, "Wonderful."

There were only 65 dozen made of this gorgeous, fascinating red wine. Allocations are limited. Final stocks available.

About Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, most often there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

The Wine Front

"Around 65 dozen were made. This is a striking wine. It’s set up for those who like loads of spice, chewy tannins and vitality of fresh, dense fruit. It’s rested enough to mesh tannin, spice, bright acidity and fruitiness, but still gives off a youthful appeal. The wine is furiously spicy, like an accidental tip of too much garam masala and pepper into a warm cooking pot, almost makes you reel. The palate is spicy too, trimmed with sinewy ropes of slender tannin, bleeds dark, ripe berry fruit character, has a lick of cola to it, finishes with saltbush and Chinese five spice and a big building pucker. It’s unreal, all tannin and darkness, fine, and yet arrogantly fresh. Wonderful." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

From The Producer

Sagrantino stole our heart.

We made a pilgrimage to Umbria – the “Green Heart of Italy” and home of Sagrantino in 2015. Like giddy schoolchildren (of legal drinking age!) we tore around the countryside in a drop-top Fiat 500 and sampled Sagrantino in every form available. Sweet sacrement wine – the way it was first produced centuries ago, bold table wines, sparkling and sparkling rose.

A handful of kilometres from our home, Joe Lopresti with his dad and uncle tend just 2 rows of precious Sagrantino. Slow to grow, not vigorous, late to ripen, it is easily spotted from Aldinga road. We secured some fruit from Joe and a dream was born.
