About The Wine

This is a wine very close to Simon Killeen's heart, and you can see the fire in his eyes when he talks about it. To give some context, I'll quote Campbell Mattinson, "Simon’s late father, Chris Killeen, was renowned as an experimenter, a champion of Portuguese varieties in Australia, and as the producer of Australia’s best and most interesting Vintage Port. He died far too young."

The torch has been taken up by Simon. His VP is a bit of a game changer. Made in a traditional method from six different varieties; Shiraz, Tempranillo, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Durif, this is intentionally a drier and more refreshing style of fortified.

This will cellar beautifully but is as good as anything we've tried as a young wine of this style. Simon wants this wine to challenge the big boys of Australian fortified wines, and you know what, he's on to something.

About Simão & Co.

Simon Killeen is a seventh generation winemaker born and raised in the Rutherglen region.

His father and grandfather crafted some of the country's most legendary fortified wines, now Simon is taking up the mantle under his own label, Simão & Co.

Simão (Portuguese for Simon) is a nod to his love of traditional Portuguese fortifieds and his time spent making wine in the Douro.

Simon is deeply passionate about the wine and history of North-East Victoria. With a range that spreads from Beechworth to the King Valley and out to Glenrowan, he is making it his mission to spread the word on the unique wines from his home.

The Wine Front

"In the words of Simon Killeen: “6 varieties: Shiraz, Tempranillo, Alicante bouschet, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and Durif. Co-fermented, fully foot stomped, 100% stalks and 100% wild. Trying to make port with the power, depth and push that the great wines of the Douro have. This wine for me will forever be inspired by the great ports from 1966 and more recent vintages like 2007 and 2011. I make my port drier (refreshment, drinkability) and higher in alcohol (longevity and complexity). Bottled under both cork and screw cap because I like the aged characters under cork and I want to see what screw cap does to this style of wine. 30 magnums also bottled. This is a wine/style that I will take on the aristocracy of fortifieds with.” 375ml. You could tuck into this, easy as you like. The alcohol is warming and clear but it works in neatly, in the context of the style. Bitumen, dried herbs, red berries, both a sweetness and a sourness. Dark chocolate, melted, oozing, low in sweetness and high in cocoa. It’s ever so delicious, despite its seriousness." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
