Description

The Koomilya project is Steve Pannell's "proudest accomplishment in wine."

This single block in McLaren Vale holds a special place in his heart, being the main source of his first Jimmy Watson Trophy winning wine, the 1995 Eileen Hardy Shiraz. On top of that, Steve has a certain spiritual connection to this site, "Out of the hundreds of vineyards I have visited around the world, this was the vineyard I fell in love with and most wanted to own."

Now as the custodian of this vineyard, Steve is releasing his first single vineyard wines from this block. It's his best attempt to distill this special site into a bottle. The 2014 Shiraz is stunning. A pure and powerful example of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.

What's inside these bottles is magnificent, this is surely the making of a future icon wine for this region.

First planted in the late 1800s by the Hardy family, the vines in the Koomilya vineyard are now 70 years old. It is in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, with more sand in the soil than other McLaren Vale sites. The Shiraz fruit had a long maceration period and underwent open top fermentation. It was then transferred to a four year old 2,700 litre French oak vat and a three year old French puncheon to age for 16 months with no racking.

96 Points - "It's an interesting wine. Different, in a good way. It's rich, sweet and porty in some ways; it's very McLaren Vale. But then it's dry, meaty, ferrous and earthen in others; the back label uses the words “Dry Red”, and it's like the definitive version of those words. It's a hulking wine, strapped with liquorice, firmly tannic, tense and taut but powerful and dense. It feels old-fashioned but not in a dirty way; in demeanour. If anyone ever says to you that They Don't Make Things The Way They Used To, get them to taste this wine. It's built to last. You'll wear out before it does; your grandchildren will be swapping it around at collector's meets in 100 years time." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
