2014 Denton View Hill Nebbiolo

Yarra Valley, VIC

Nebbiolo from the hands of Luke Lambert.

About The Wine

The Denton vineyard is unusual in the Yarra Valley.

The hulking granite boulders just under the surface of the vineyard are unique for the region. Luke Lambert believes the Denton View Hill vineyard has the potential to make one of the country's best Nebbiolos.

The combination of the aspect of the vineyard, the lean granitic soils and the long hang time in the Yarra Valley all adding up to huge potential. The fruit from the site is split 50/50 between Luke Lambert's own label and the Denton View Hill label.

The major difference being Luke's use of very large format oak for his, as opposed to the 29-year-old 500L puncheons used for Denton. It's a wine for the Nebbiolo lovers.

Mostly classically styled but with a hint of new world influence.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

The cherries, the coal, the nip of licorice, and yes, with some air, the roses in bloom. The tannins are firm but well meshed to the fruit. It's long a sweetly fruited but transitions to savoury through the finish with the signature Nebbiolo pucker. Really needs a big decant to really strut its stuff. Luke sure knows how to make this variety sing. - Different Drop Wine Team

The Wine Front

"Impressive wine. Feels both fresh and developed at once. Licorice, leather, black cherry, ferrous qualities, herbs and spices. A fraction of alcohol warmth. Chicory notes. Tannin curls through the wine, the ends scribbling slightly outside the lines of flavour. On close inspection each piece of the puzzle is a little too clear but just sitting down and drinking it is an entirely rewarding experience." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

This wine is sourced from a single block within the Denton Vineyard. Unique for the Yarra Valley, the Denton vineyard is a granite outcrop full of large granite boulders under granitic sand.

This vineyard always contributes plenty of bright red fruit and floral perfume along with gun-flint, graphite characters typical of a granitic soil profile. 120 metres altitude. North West facing slope. Destemmed, wild yeast fermented and held on skins for 30 days with submerged cap. No temperature control. Frequent pump overs and plunging, gentle air inclusion.

Pressed to barrel (500l – 29 year old puncheons). Left unsulfured for 18 months in oak prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
