About The Wine

Spinifex has helped redefine the modern Barossa Valley.

Winemaker Peter Schell is a master blender, constantly searching for balance and a more refined vision of the Barossa.

The Indigene is a classic Rhone Valley blend of Shiraz & Mataro , sourced from six vineyards averaging 70 years of age.

The 2013 follows in the 2012's footsteps being a more delicate and vibrant wine than in previous years, but it certainly doesn't lack power or complexity.

With 96 points from James Halliday, 94 points from Mike Bennie on release, and now a little extra time in bottle, this wine is really coming into its own.

About Spinifex

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection.

He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

From The Producer

Mataro/Shiraz. As always, Indigene is based on the Barossa's wonderful resource of old-vine Mataro (aka Mourvèdre), sourced from tiny pockets of vines on the region's eastern fringes.

The Mataro component this year comes from two sites with deep sand soils in Vine Vale and Ebenezer. The vines range from 20 to 90 years old, with an impressively high average of 70 years. The Shiraz was drawn from four vineyards across the Barossa Valley, with vines again averaging 70 years of age (ranging from 20 to 110 years), and having soils that comprise of quartz shot clays and silty, sandy soils.

The elevation for these sites was between 230 and 420 m.a.s.l. Each variety is treated separately; the Mataro foot-crushed and raised in large format oak to preserve its subtle aromatics. The Shiraz raised in mature barrique and a single 600 litre demi-muid.

The final blend is bottled without fining or filtration. 30% whole bunches.

Blend : Shiraz (60%), Mataro (40%)
ABV : 14.5%

Halliday Wine Companion

"The deluxe, weighty bottle for this shiraz mataro blend is not out of place; the colour is exceptional, and is no false dawn for a wine of extreme complexity. First up there s a deep ocean swell of dark berry and plum fruit, then a crosscurrent of savoury flavours and fine, but insistent, tannins; a long finish to close. All class." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"This wine finds itself a blend of 60% shiraz and 40% mataro in the year of 2013. It’s a wine sent to larger format oak and given a bit of help from a slightly earlier pick. For what it’s worth, Peramangk and Ngadjuri people are the indigene of the Barossa Valley. Really pretty, really floral perfume. Wild flowers, rose petals, pot pourri, stalks and stems, rosemary herbs. Big perfume dragging you into the glass. Cool, restrained and fine in the mouth. Set to a much lighter expression of the Barossa, with cool acidity set under the slick flow of red and black fruits, dusted with spice, lifted with suggestion of green herbs. Composed, sleek and squeaky tight. Proper elegant feel, within a different shade of Barossa wine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
