It would not be a stretch to say that this is the wine that made the S.C. Pannell label.

It was the second time that Steve Pannell had won Australia's most prestigious wine award, the Jimmy Watson Trophy, however this was the first time it was for a wine with his own name on it.

"Soon after picking this fruit I knew the resulting wine was going to be special - I’m even quoted in an article stating I thought it was a chance for the Watson!"
- Stephen Pannell

It comes from a stunning vineyard in Echunga, in the south of the Adelaide Hills. Like all of Steve's wines it is built around bright fruit and beautiful tannins.

This is the embodiment of modern cool-climate Syrah. A classy and sophisticated wine driven by perfume and spice. At ten years of age, this is drinking beautifully. A rare treat to see a brilliant wine like this at the peak of its life. Extremely limited. Serious collectors should jump quickly.

"It's multi-layered and powerful, concentrated and intense, with great drive and persistence, and a profound depth of complex matured flavour. It still has many years ahead of it. A great wine..."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

" I couldn’t wait to release it and as I look back now, the release of this wine marked a pivotal moment in our lives, a stroke of good fortune that established everything that we have today."
- Stephen Pannell

I knew this wine would keep well and reserving some stock for a future release is always very exciting. Wonderful now but I’ll be keeping a few bottles for a celebration in 2026 and suggest you do the same.

97 points - "Super-deep colour with some tawny and black tinges but also a trace of purple: remarkably youthful for its age. Ultra-complex bouquet of roasting meats, raisin-toast (with cinnamon!). In the mouth it's multi-layered and powerful, concentrated and intense, with great drive and persistence, and a profound depth of complex matured flavour. It still has many years ahead of it. A great wine for those who still think screwcaps compromise the aging of red wines." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

93 points - "Meaty and spicy, a distinct pimento thing here, black fruit of sweetness developing some more earthy and tobacco-like tones, mint, also some liquorice richness and violet perfume. It’s medium-bodied, all the spice, shitake mushroom and leather, but holding on with almost pastille black fruit richness, silty and fleshy tannin grip, cocoa, apricot kernel and sundried tomato. Finish is long and dry, and distinctly spicy. Engaging and kind of saline with it. I’d say it’s right in the zone now, though no hurry." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

97 points - "Winner of the Jimmy Watson Trophy '14. Seductive from the first drop to the last. Spice-shot berries, black and red, a coating of nuts and cream giving the flavours a sheen. Amaro-like infusions. Sophisticated and yet generally accessible. Beautiful, grainy, peppery length, seamed by ultra-fine tannin. Poster child of savoury-accented Australian red wine." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
