About

About The Wine

The Brooks Road Shiraz is one of the more characterful Shiraz you will find from McLaren Vale.

With the vineyard located not too far the Adelaide Hills, it has a distinctly cool-climate feel not often found in this region. But don’t be fooled, this is no lightweight Shiraz, it has depth and structure to boot and is definitely something that can be revisited again and again over a decade or two.

With 95 points from Halliday and 94 from Gary Walsh, the quality of this wine and its pedigree are apparent in every sip. With the 2012 only the first release under this label it is easy to see why some of the biggest names in wine have made the pilgrimage for this fruit for more than 40 years. It will continue to mature gracefully for years to come.

About Hickinbotham

The Hickinbotham vineyard is somewhat of a legend amongst the Australian winemaking community.

Planted in 1971 in the Clarendon region, fruit from this important site has contributed to some of the most iconic wines in Australia's history, including Penfolds Grange, Eileen Hardy and Clarendon Hills.

Recently, the vineyard has undergone somewhat of a renaissance after being purchased by American wine juggernaut, the Jackson family, and being placed into the winemaking care of Yangarra winemaker Peter Fraser and respected American winemaker, Chris Carpenter.

These are elite premium wines that are made limited quantities and are built to mature gracefully. The ultimate addition to any serious collector's cellar.

From The Producer

Background: Intensely graceful and youthfully elegant, Brooks Road is a new resurgence of Australian Shiraz that captures the most acute aspects of the fruit. The sharp summery breeze of the high country offsets the dark, brooding berries and the bright earthiness of the red beet clusters.

It’s all there in the glass to be had - scents of dark currants and red berries mingle with freshly excavated roots and culminate in the taste of dry dusty air on the pasture that lingeringly departs with the faintest memory of cedary oak. It’s a spicy, lively thing that beckons you to return. Crafting the Wine: After the hand-picked Shiraz clusters were delivered from high country (210-230 metres) by Viticulturer Michael Lane, Winemaker Charlie Seppelt destemmed and sorted the berries into open fermenters.

The cold soak was four days, the skins plunged four times daily, and the minimum time on skins was fourteen days. The wine was then basket pressed; its free run and pressings kept separate. To minimise filtration at bottling, four rack-and-returns were conducted over eighteen months as the wine seasoned in a mixture of Burgundy-coopered barrels.

95Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"The first vintage made by Yangarra from the Hickinbotham Vineyard after its far larger parent company, Jackson Family Estate, purchased it in '11. Deeply coloured and unashamedly full-bodied, it has layer-upon-layer of black fruits, tannins and the French oak in which it was matured for 18 months; significantly, the decision was to not fine the tannins." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

94Points
The Wine Front

"Vineyard planted in 1971, and I believe, once a source of fruit to many a very premium wine. Blackberry, dried mint, toast and tar – brooding while wearing perfume. Full bodied, slick of ripe fleshy tannin, dark chocolate and plum with acidity just shy of being too pushy. Brown toast and blackberry on the finish. Deep, rolling wine with plenty of substance, through it’s not over-wrought. Feels like it’s built for the future." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
