About

About The Wine

The iconic Mount Mary Quintet is one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.

A blend of the five Bordeaux varieties, planted side-by-side on one of the Yarra's most revered sites. This personifies the medium-bodied, regal style of Cabernet blends from this region.

The 2010 vintage was heralded as "a great season for us too. Could become one of our best" by young family winemaker Sam Middleton. All the ducks in a row.

Mike Bennie called it as one of the best Cabernet wines he tried in 2012 with 95 points, now at seven years of age, it is only just beginning to blossom. A thing of beauty. A thing of class. A wine for the cellar to be marvelled at for decades to come.

About Mount Mary

One of the great Australian domains is in the form of its life with young Sam Middleton as head winemaker.

The list of accolades for the great Mount Mary is long and rich. They are one of the country's most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates.

From the impossible balance of the iconic Quintet and Triolet blends to the scintillating Chardonnays and the rare and almost mythical Pinot Noir, there is not a hair out of place in the Mount Mary line up.

With Sam Middleton in charge of the winemaking process, Mount Mary is entering its second golden age as one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.

From The Producer

Our vineyard is planted to Cabernet sauvignon (50%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet franc (15%), Malbec (5%) and Petit verdot (5%).

The percentage of each variety that goes into the final blend changes with the season as factors such as fruitfulness and fruit set vary. The greatest influence we have over the quality of this wine is deciding when to pick each variety. This determines not only the flavours but the quality of tannins, the acid and alcohol levels.

These varieties ferment on skins for around 12-14 days. This is followed by 22 months of barrel maturation, with 25% of the blend in large format oak (1500L or larger), and 30% in new barriques (225L). The remaining wine is matured in 2-5 year old barriques. Minimal fining and filtration is carried out prior to bottling.

Blend : Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot

95Points
The Wine Front

"Whoowee, dig this perfume. Really complex aroma spectrum – immediately engaging too. Cassis, dark fruits, touch of briar herbal lift, flash of mint, chocolatey and stubbed out cigar embers. At once cool and rich. Slender ribbons of fruit, acid and fine bony tannin across the palate. Has that succulent but strict feel, like sucking on a hard lolly as it diminishes. Beautiful, medium-bodied feel too – the wine finishes long and pure, eddying with the linger of tannin and powdered slate-like minerality. It’s in that zone of refreshment and elegance, where a repeat visit to the glass is effortless but there’s lots to explore in texture and flavour. Could be a contender for best cabernet (and cabernet blend) for me for the year (2012 releases)." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"A 47/30/14/5/4% blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec, its colour bright crimson-purple; yet another wine to turn back the alcohol hands of time, albeit in the best possible way, for its vibrant black and redcurrant fruit rolls out for a seeming eternity on the palate and lingering aftertaste." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
