It’s one of the best red wines from Pepe in years.
About the Wine
This supreme expression of the red grape Montepulciano is made by Emidio Pepe, the pioneering Abruzzo winemaker. He, and his (large) family make an astonishingly complex wine, that needs time to reveal its myriad of charms.
And they do it without any artifice or additions, no sulphur, not even any oak, as the wine is matured in glass-lined concrete. Every last aspect is done by hand, from the individually picked grape bunches to the decanting of each bottle before it is sold, rather than any fining of filtering.
And the wine itself? They can be rustic at first but then settle into elegant, exotic, black-fruited masterpieces. Tick these off your Italian wine wish-list.
About Emidio Pepe
Emidio Pepe has a lot of vintages under his belt - he started his winery in 1964, expanding on the knowledge gained from his father and grandfather, vignerons both.
The winery and vineyards are located in the northern part of Abruzzo, situated inbetween the Adriatic Sea and the mountain, not far from Siena and the southern borders of Chianti. It is warm, windy local climate, perfect for the indigenous varieties they champion; Montepulciano, Trebbiano and a small holding of Pecorino.
Never have chemicals been used in the vineyards- Signor Pepe is firm believer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, and looking after the land that gives them so much. No oak is used with any of their wines, red or white. They also make outstanding pasta and olive oil, because, well... Italian.
