Here's and interesting project from two out of the box thinkers in the Yarra Valley. This is a single vineyard Sangiovese from Gruyere, multi-vintage, bottled from Solera. It's a good way to build complexity into a wine on release and a stroke of creativity which has really paid dividends for the P&J duo. The aged material gives you the more savoury sides of Sangio, the newer stuff gives vibrancy and juicy fruit. It makes this a wicked wine to drink now with a load of attitude.
What it Tastes Like
Licorice, green leaves, black cherry and blackberry and notes of tar. Pretty powerful wine here. The sheets of gritty tannin scream its variety, the combination of vintage material giving the wine layers of complexity. It's savoury and a bit guttural in style which is cool. Edgy wine. Stacks of personality and great fun to drink.

From school mates to business partners, the two boys who form Behn Payten & Troy Jones have been destined to work together for many years. They are now making small batches of slightly edgy wine from the Yarra Valley. The wines are made with minimal cleaning up, the duo believing that if you take out too much, you can fine and filter the soul out of a wine. They do things their own way and that’s the way they like it.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
