Description

The Underhill Shiraz comes from 8 acres of vines on the far Western side of the famous Yarra Yering vineyard in Gruyere.

Planted by Dr. Carrodus in 1973, the wines from this site tend to show better in their youth than the brooding powerhouse that is the Dry Red No. 2.

Underhill is approachable from day one, however, a few years in the cellar wouldn't hurt it either. This is yet another fantastic release from Sarah Crowe, bold and full-flavoured.

If you love Shiraz/Syrah from the Yarra Valley, this wine would make an excellent addition to your cellar.

Hand harvested, the bunches pass across a sorting table before processing either as whole bunches or whole berries. 50% of the block is fermented and matured in a second use 3500L upright oak cask containing 20% whole bunches and topped up for maturation with 100% whole bunch component. The remainder of fermentation in the Yarra Yering half-tonne open- fermenters, gently hand lunged twice daily. Air bag pressed to release the last fermenting juice from the many whole berries remaining. The wine then aged for 12 months; 50% in the 3500L one year old cask and 50% to French oak puncheons (500L); 10% new oak.

97 Points - "From a 3.2ha block of shiraz, planted on the far western side at Yarra Yering in 1973. Half was fermented with 20% whole bunches in one 3,500L old oak cask, pressed and returned to this cask to mature for 12 months. The other half was matured in puncheons for 12 months. A very bright, medium crimson purple. A riotous amalgam of aromas including blueberries, potpourri, licorice root, Szechuan pepper and caraway seeds. Medium bodied and elegant, this has terrific viscosity and the tannins are oh, so powdery and fine. Gorgeous now and over the next 10 years or longer." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 Points - "Deep, bright red-purple colour; intense and lifted pepper/spice aromas, very attractive and aromatic. Ferrous/mineral/dried blood overtones. Full-bodied, deep and quite powerful shiraz, the palate concentrated and intensely focused, with profound spice and dark-cherry flavours that linger on and on through a very persistent finish. Seamless. An outstanding shiraz." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 Points - "Beautiful aromas of blackberry, violets and sandalwood. Some match stick and flint. Full-bodied yet very polished and creamy with tangy acidity. Lemon peel. White pepper. Tasty and fresh shiraz." - James Suckling

Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
