About

About The Wine

While the Macedon Ranges may be home base for Place of Changing Winds, owner Rob Walters has also tended an organic vineyard in Heathcote for some years.

Here, the two worlds collide - a blend of the ethereal Pinot Noir from the Macedon site and Syrah from Heathcote - it's a sort of 'beauty and the beast' combination that has created a stunning, vibrant red of beguiling charm.

It's soft, slippery and super-smooth to drink. It's a fitting homage to the great red wines of Maurice O'Shea from the 1950s and 1960s.

It's the very model of a modern Australian red wine and great value to boot.

About Place of Changing Winds

The Place of Changing Years vineyard was planted by notable Australian wine importer, journalist, and author, Rob Walters.

Rob had hunted for a special site to plant in the cooler climes of Australia for many years. One day, esteemed grower/winemaker at Bindi, Michael Dhillon, called him and said, "Rob, I've found your vineyard."

The site sits at 500m above sea level in the Macedon Ranges. Rob has farmed it organically from the start. Planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at an incredible average of 15,000 vines per hectare, this is one of the most exciting emerging viticultural projects in the country.

Rob is one of the great thinkers in Australian wine. You can expect great things as his project begins to blossom.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Place of Changing Winds is an organic, high-density vineyard located in Bullengarook, a small hamlet in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria. Changing Winds takes its name from the original inhabitants, the Wurundjeri people, who named the place where the vines are currently planted Warekilla (or Place of Changing Winds). This characteristic still holds true today.

Situated at 500 metres above sea level, the ancient soils here are riddled with quartz, quartzite and sandstone and only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is grown. The vines are planted very closely at a range of densities—from 12,000 to 33,000 vines/ha. The average density is over 15,000 vines/ha. Through decades of research and engagement we have developed our own version of organic practice, a model specifically adapted to our place and our vision. This model is designed to produce wines of the highest possible quality and the maximum expression of place. Our motto: no compromise, no regrets!

The Wine Front

"A beauty. Silken texture that turns to succulence and a firm pucker. Wildly aromatic with a chorus of brambles, autumnal dried leaves, cherry, game meat, light eucalyptus and white pepper. It sings in the palate, that texture is just superb and there’s immense concentration and detail in the layers of flavour despite the wine maintaining a relative light weight. It carries long and beautifully, fine through its lightly fanning and puckering finish. I wanted to go back to this wine a lot. It has charm and interest, architecture and drinkability in synch. L’chaim!" - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
