About The Wine

This high-octane Sauvignon Blanc comes from organic vines in the Nelson region.

The wines was made by the notorious Michael Glover (ex-Bannockburn winemaker & owner of Mammoth Wines in Nelson). Glover is known for his exploits in skin contact with Sauvignon Blanc. It works a treat here.

The fruit was fermented entirely on skins, then spent 10 months in a mixture of old French oak and new acacia puncheons. Full noise. The kitchen sink.

This is a full-bodied, powerful Sauvignon Blanc that doesn't hold back.

From The Producer

Cropped from the yellow ultic soils of the Mahana vineyard, this multifaceted, intense white was fermented entirely on skins with indigenous yeasts, before spending 10 months in a mixture of old French oak barriques and new acacia puncheons.

This approach requires a great deal of skill and sensitivity to get right and it requires superb fruit.

DDS review

"A very unusual Sauvignon, with masses of flavour that's a mix of subtle fruit (grapefruit and apricot?) and nutty savoury characters. A wine that's more about texture than taste - it's mouth-filling, with peppery tannins. An adventurous and complex wine for savouring rather than quaffing. Hard to rate. Should age well. The Wine Front

"Sometimes I wonder what the old guard, the Len Evans and those of a similar ilk, who have passed on, would make of the way skin contact is working its way back into the mainstream of winemaking. Phenolics in white wine, when I entered wine show judging as a fledgling, were considered a fault. Still are by some. Anyway, here’s Mahana making Nelson sauvignon blanc with some skinsy mojo.Spends a month on skins then went into acacia and oak for 12 months, then another six months on lees in tank. Shane Munn, the previous winemaker made 2013 Mammoth White (also skin contact fermented), and he wanted to go left of centre with sauvignon blanc, and so this happened. The 2013 dipped a toe in the water, around 10% skin ferment, then in 2014 he fully committed. “I don’t go as long on skins, but this worked out when I finished it off”, says Mahana winemaker Michael Glover.Loads of aroma, lots of spice, lots of ripe fruit, lots of apple skin, dried apple, exotic quince aromas. Really pleasing, complex intro. The palate shows you who’s boss. Thick in chalky tannin, punchy in peppery spice, juicy in lemon/lime citrusy flavours. Layered, complex, strong. It’s very good in it’s style. Hello porchetta." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Complex and delicious Sauvignon Blanc with a difference

When you first pour this, you know that it is far from your standard Sauvignon Blanc, with its deep yellow hue and complex aroma. Not dissimilar in style from the Bannockburn Sauvignon Blancs produced under Michael Glover's watch, this is a genuinely interesting and delicious wine that would work well with a wide variety of dishes. I'd be really interested to try this again in 5-10 years. Definitely worth trying even if you don't usually like Sauvignon Blanc!
