About The Wine

This home-grown Shiraz is an absolute ripper.

Tessa and Jeremy's site, the Thorley vineyard, sits high in the back hills of Beechworth near the township of Stanley. It's the highest altitude site in region. During winter, snow is not uncommon.

The vines were all lovingly planted by friends and family. The site is being farmed organically. The potential is huge.

This is a true cool-climate Shiraz - fine-boned, spicy and outrageously delicious.

These two are future leaders of the region. This excellent Shiraz released from their home block is the next piece of the puzzle.

About Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

From The Producer

Our third harvest from the home Thorley site.

Deep purple-hued, and a serious, dark violet floral, cool climate shiraz nose: minced concentrated fruits, slatey rocks, some fine white and black pepper. The palate is medium bodied, tightly wound and savoury – a dusting of pepper on crushed blueberries comes to mind, with some almost smokey olive flesh lilts. Silty tannins to length, this is still a very young wine.

Critic Reviews

95Points
The Wine Front

"Terrific cool climate shiraz. A truly beautiful wine. Sage, black cherry, woodsy-peppery spice, a veneer of smoked cedar wood, a gentle meatiness and then more berries, more fruit. Tannin laces its way through the back half of the wine; acidity keeps everything straight, not to mention juicy. It’s beautifully balanced and so, accordingly, it’s in great drinking shape already, right now. No hesitation on this one." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand picked, destemmed whole berries, wild ferment, basket pressed to barrique, 10 months' maturation in oak (25% new). A beauty in repose that was tasted before release but had all the hallmarks of an assured, elegant future. Dark-plum fruit, anise, pepper, dusty oak spice. Palate is lithe with fine tannins and a composed core of berry, peppery flavour. A wine that will reward patience." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Real Review

"Medium ruby colour into a bright purple rim. White pepper, raspberry, and iodine aromas. A medium-bodied wine, with bright red fruit and a gravelly minerality. Structured with both acid and tannins giving a narrow focus but very long finish. Needs time to settle somewhat." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)
