2020 Vanguardist Mourvedre

McLaren Vale, SA

Perfumed and powerful Mourvedre (Mataro), a new release from Vanguardist. Savoury, complex and more full-bodied than its Grenache siblings.

About The Wine

Mourvedre and Grenache are an-oft seen wine combination and Vanguardist has been using fruit sourced from this Yangarra vineyard in Blewiit Springs in their other wines for a while. But this is a first varietal release under the main Vanguardist label, and it is a gorgeously big savoury number.

Very Rhoney, with the wild herbs and gamey meat characters that are so varietally aligned. Dark fruited with blackberry and blueberries, and the mouthfeel is slnewy and chewy.

A fair whack of whole bunches used, and fourteen months in quality French oak.

The vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic.

About Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

From The Producer

The Mourvèdre is sourced from Yangarra, both organic and Bio-dynamic certified, in Blewitt Springs. The summer of 2020 was the third hot and dry vintage in succession. Small patches of rain during critical moments helped the vines remain vibrant, and the fruit in wonderful condition. The final wine sees around 40% whole bunch.

We’ve been making wine from this fruit for four years now. However, 2020 saw the first release of a red blend (La Petite Vanguard BLEWITT), and the inaugural Vanguardist Mourvèdre. Inspired by many great Mourvèdre wines from throughout the SW of France, it felt like a natural progression to have this wine sit beside the Vanguardist Grenache from just down the road.

French oak puncheons housed the wine for about 14 months post press, before the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Sourced from Yangarra, Blewitt Springs. 40% whole bunch. French oak puncheons.Purple flower perfume, and a sort of purple power to the wine too. Medium-bodied, ironstone, nutty and savoury, dried herbs and grilled meat, seaweed and blueberry, fine mass of silty cocoa tannin, and a spicy herb-strewn raspberry finish of excellent length. Lovely chew and meaty charm. A fine rendition of Mataro." Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"Blueberries and red plum sit amid more sanguine, regional, iron-like aromas. Some graphite and pepper, too. Shows intensity and power on the palate with long, smooth tannins carrying red and blue-fruit flavors. Fresh finish. Drink over the next eight years." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)

If your order is placed before 12pm we’ll get it on the truck that day. Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
