About The Wine

Introducing Papillon - one of the most gluggable reds in the Barossa Valley!

The Spinifex wines cover a wide spectrum, from rich, full-throttled old vine Shiraz all the way to this, a light bodied, energetic Grenache Cinsault blend made for easy day-time drinking.

These styles are certainly in vogue but as usual, winemaking wizard Schell elevates it to another level, utilising incredibly old vines and astute winemaking to add depth and complexity to what is joyously pure red berried fruit.

Papillon is one of our go-to's and just unbeatable value.  What a producer Spinifex is.

About Spinifex

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection.

He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Crafted from a range of old vine, dry grown Grenache and Cinsault (90 years of age on average), located in the east and far northern reaches of the Barossa Valley. Each vineyard is hand harvested when just ripe to "...ensure natural acids, freshness, spice and the fresher, edgier tannins are preserved." As always, the wine is naturally fermented with a portion of whole bunches (30% in this case for heightened fragrance and more freshness) and pulled out of old wood after six months with the same logic.

Blend : Grenache, Cinsault
ABV : 13.5%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2026
Bottle Size : 750ml

The Wine Front

"Mostly grenache, some cinsault. Playful GC blend.Juicy, flirty red. Floral scents, red berries in scents and flavours, good chomp of sticky tannins, this fine, fresh feel throughout. Glistens in the palate; like sucking on a ruby. That lightness and vitality sure is appealing. A very bright, youthful expression of Barossa red, with complexity in tow." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"A 78/22% blend of old Barossa Valley grenache and cinsault from vines aged 40–120 years old. I've always been a fan of this bouncy and intensely aromatic blend for its effortless inherent drinkability and sense of space. Purple hued and light of body, it flits around the palate leaving trails of floral-flecked red fruits, souk-like spice and gentle gypsum-like tannins. Playful, supple & very moreish." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Absolute Pleasure

Great blend, have been enjoying everything from the Spinifex range. Slight earthy flavour and plenty of punch. Great value for under $30.

Has become a staple in my collection!

Solid Table wine

Genuinely good, straight from the beginning, enjoyable without being snobby or pretension. I like the complexity, the blend work well together, as well as the aromatics components and the fresh acidity which makes the wine vibrant and fresh. Clean aftertaste. After two days, still good, fragrant and pleasant. Worth the money and the experience.
