96 points & Top 100 Australian Wines of 2023
Delicious already, but you would be a fool not to give this time.
- Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

The GT can either stand for GrafTed or Gewurztraminer, as it is a block of Gewurz that was grafted over to Shiraz.

It's Shiraz that has been amplified all around without being OTT in the slightest. Huge spicy and floral smells, sweet-fruited meaty and tarry on the palate with rich, velvety waves of flavour.

Steve Pannell does genius things with his favourite Koomilya vineyard, and this brand new wine further adds to his already formidable arsenal of great McLaren Vale Shiraz.

A single block Shiraz from 31 year old vines grafted on Gewurztraminer planted in 1974 by Jill and Don Cant, the previous owners.

An aroma avalanche that seems to have no end starting with all the
black fruits and violets moving through lighter notes of bergamot, sandalwood and petrichor and going on to offer smoked brazil nut, cumin, cardamon and charcuterie. The nose is lively and seductive and offers a different vantage point with each raise of the glass.

Hand harvested a week earlier than the 2018, crushed with 23% left
as whole bunches, and gently pressed after spontaneous fermentation and 13 days on skins. Settled in tank for 10 days, racked off yeast lees and sent to French oak puncheons, 20% new, for malolactic fermentation and short maturation. Racked once in December 2019 before
extended maturation in French Oak Puncheons. Bottled, unfined.

96 Points - "There’s a freshness and lift to the wine despite the concentration and layering of dark fruit, woody spice and general inkiness. The character of gewurz seems omnipresent despite no gewurz here – it’s floral and pretty shiraz, flirty and quite notably silky, more soft in the shiraz spectrum and red fruited inflections chime in with plum and dark, forest berry fruits. A lick of cola and char here but the wine floats and swishes on velvety tannins and finishes extremely long and fine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96 Points - "GT could stand for either 'grafted' or ' gewürztraminer', given this is a 31-year-old shiraz block grafted to the latter. Fermented with ambient yeast replete with 23% whole bunches; 13 days on skins before mlf and a short stint in French puncheons (20% new). Racked once before bottling in Jul ’20. I can't stop mumbling about the wine's freshness and savour. Blue pastille, redcurrant, clove, lilac and dried salumi blend with a sachet of Indian spice that splits further with each sip. Clove, tamarind and sandalwood, too. The lightest of feel, yet framed by a jittery nerve of filigreed tannins and perky freshness driving length and promoting compression. Delicious already, but you'd be a fool not to give this time." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
