2018 Mallaluka Hilltops Riesling

Hilltops, NSW

Totally original Riesling here from an exciting young winemaker in Sam Leyshon. Textural yet gluggable!

Really lovely, textural expression. Complex, fresh, delicious.

About The Wine

Sam Leyshon's expression of Riesling from the Hilltops is awesome drinking on a warm afternoon.

There's no skin contact here, rather old barrels and lees time are used by Sam to build some scaffolding around the pure, energetic fruit from the Freeman vineyard.

Blink and a glass of this will disappear in front of your eyes.

Well and truly worth the exploration if you're look for something outside the classic 'line-and-length' Australian Riesling style.

About Mallaluka Wines

Mallaluka is a family affair in the Canberra district of NSW.

These estate-grown wines are made by second generation vigneron Sam Leyshon who has most recently learnt to ply his trade assisting Bryan Martin and Tim Kirk at Clonakilla.

These are modern wines that reflect the changing face of this exciting region. He makes wines with a wild side, they are made with minimal intervention and are insane value for money.

With Sam in the driver's seat, Mallaluka is one of the rising stars of the region, bringing a unique light and shade to the Canberra district.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Scents on lemon barley water, faint nuttiness, ripe citrus. Fleshier than expected in the palate but with undertow of crisp, zesty acidity. Has an almost piquant tartness to the finish, pleasingly, tonic water bitter. Really lovely, textural expression. Complex, fresh, delicious." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Fruit from Freeman vineyards in Prunevale, Hilltops region. Pressed to 65% yield. Separating free run, mid press and hard press into 3 different ferments. Free run and mid press juice racked off lees and then fermented on indigenous yeast in stainless steel. Hard press juice pressed straight into old french oak barriques on gross lees and fermented with indigenous yeast. All 3 batches racked off fermentation lees after 4 weeks post fermentation and stored for 5 months to settle. Blended together with no fining or filtration. 30ppm SO2 added before bottling.

Honey dew, citrus flowers and lime. Loads of texture and warming to the palate. Unlike the stripped, austere local rieslings we're used to, this has character and depth. To be drunk between room and fridge temperature.

Blend : Riesling (100%)
ABV : 12.0%
Closure : Screw cap
