About The Wine

Angus Vinden likes his Tempranillo full-bodied and souped-up.

This is fruit from the Sommerset vineyard where Angus used to work before taking over the reigns at his family winery.

The vines were planted in 2004 and a really hitting their straps now serving up surprisingly intense fruit for Angus to play with.

It's more of a 'Reserve' style of Tempranillo - rich in fruit and well framed with toasty oak - than a lot of the jubey 'joven' styles of Tempranillo being produced in Australia currently.

A powerhouse of a wine and something that should cellar a treat.

About Vinden Estate

Young Angus Vinden is the owner/winemaker of this much-loved Hunter Valley winery.

Having taken the reins from his father just a few years ago, Gus is reimagining his family's wine label with a string of exciting, modern wines coming out of his cellar.

He sources fruit from some of the Hunter's greatest vineyards, focusing on Semillon and Shiraz primarily as well as turning out a very good Tempranillo.

He's one of the young guns of the Hunter Valley that should have a close eye kept on him. His wines are on the up!

The Wine Front

"From younger vines (2004) off the Somerset Vineyard. Tempranillo and Hunter Valley seems a pretty logical thing by my reckoning. These might be some of the older tempranillo vines in Australia, but not the oldest. Earthy notes, cola, dark berries, some faint espresso and mocha whiffs. Juicier and brighter than expected to taste – cherry cola, plummy fruit notes, black pepper, cinnamon and sweet spice. Vibrant flavours, good ease of drinking, pulls up a little quicker than hoped, though has a good chomp of tannin, depth of flavour and is generally fun thing to drink." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Sourced from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard where I once worked, I know this vineyard almost as well as my own. Planted in 2004 on red volcanic clay soils, over weathered limestone in Pokolbin.

Picked in early February, the fruit was cold soaked, wild fermented in open concrete fermenters, hand plunged, basket pressed and aged in seasoned French & American oak for 11 months. Drink it now or sometime during the next decade as the tannins soſten.

Blend : Tempranillo (100%)
ABV : 14.0%
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2024
Bottle Size : 750ml
