2016 Rippon Gamay

Central Otago, NZ

One of the benchmark Gamays of the Southern Hemisphere. Incredible release from Nick Mills and Family.

About The Wine

Up until the 2011 vintage, the Gamay growing on Rippon went to Rosé but at a point, the fruit just tasted too good and so Rippon Gamay was born.

This is one of the most serious and structural Gamays in the Southern Hemisphere. Nick Mills brings this gently to bottle with as little tinkering as possible. Exclusively old oak is used, minimal amounts of sulphur, the winemaking inspired and guided by noted Beaujolais winemaker Julien Sunier.

For devotees of this variety, this is simply a must try. One of the most sought-after of the Rippon stable, this wine has quickly established a cult following.

A drink-now or mid-term cellaring proposition. This is fundamentally delicious wine.

About Rippon Vineyard

Rippon Vineyard is one of the most breathtaking sites in Central Otago.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed this small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows on Rippon. He now farms the site according to biodynamic principles.

The Mills family and Rippon are intrinsically linked. There's a deep connection to the land which Nick translates into their superlative wines.

Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all excel at Rippon. The wines are made with patience and love.

In the wines of Rippon, you can sense everything that is transcendent about terroir-driven winemaking where the story of a place is told through the wines it produces.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Such pretty floral, sweet fruited perfume – it’s a funny thing when you say sweetness because it’s often pejorative, but here so far from that, so inviting, familiar and good. The palate has a tightness, a strict rule in shape and form, long, pivoting on fruit, savouriness and brisk acidity, with a swathe of lacy tannin chiming in. Such personality and tension, structure and sinew. Seriously good." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Jancis Robinson

"Bright bluish crimson. Lifted juicy Gamay fruit, smells just a little volatile but in an inviting way. A touch peppery. Thick and chewy tannins, really unusual for Gamay especially with no new oak. Deep, chewy but juicy on the finish. Pretty concentrated. Very tannic and needs food or time. Chalky, chewy finish. Long, dark and spicy on the finish." - Jancis Robinson

Additional Info

From The Producer

Here it is: lovingly grown, wild fermented, barrel matured. No nutrients, no filtering or fining of any kind, minimal sulphur; we offer you the Rippon Gamay. It’s completely alive and quite beautiful. As much as we note that schist’s compression and foliated structure can issue wines of precision and detail, here schist’s refractive, luminous nature shines a direct, unadulterated light onto Gamay’s own primary fruit and spice.
