Description

Our Producer of the Year for 2023 could go to no other than Bryan Martin and his salivating stable of wines under the Ravensworth banner.

Put simply, Ravensworth is a "Desert Island" wine label. If you were stranded (God forbid) on an island and could only drink the wines of one winemaker, Ravensworth would meet your every need.

In this tasting pack you get a look at a good cross-section of his range, from blistering Riesling to moreish mid-weight reds and everything in between.

  • 2023 Ravensworth Regional Riesling
  • 2023 Ravensworth Pinot Gris
  • 2021 Ravensworth Seven Months
  • 2023 Ravensworth Gamay Noir
  • 2022 Ravensworth Regional Sangiovese
  • 2022 Ravensworth Tinto

2023 Ravensworth Regional Riesling

Those that have ever tasted the exquisite wines from the Clonakilla stable should know that most of them have been touched by the hands of Ravensworth owner/winemaker/butcher/purveyor of smoked meats, Bryan Martin.

The Ravensworth project is a chance for him to captain his own ship. The wines are some of the best value in the country.

This is a scintillating expression of Riesling. Nothing fancy (apart from a small component made in ceramic egg). Just amazing fruit made with a gentle and precise touch. This sits right alongside the best Rieslings in the Canberra region.

The demand for Bryan's wines escalates every year, and with great-value wines like this coming from him so consistently, it's no wonder.

"This is something else and delicious. Heady aromatics wafts of lemon blossom, ginger flower and spices, yet the palate steals the show. Textural, waxy, stony and complex with a silk-line of acidity all the way through. A cracking drink on its own or with food."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

2023 Ravensworth Pinot Gris

Bryan Martin is one of a kind. His winemaking approach leans heavily on his keen intuition. He's not afraid to try things, to push boundaries. His wines are out there on the cusp of interesting Australian vino, yet they don't go too far.

This look at Pinot Gris takes the variety in an interesting direction.

By allowing the fruit to spend a good amount of time on skins fermenting in a bunch of different vessels (oak, ceramic and concrete!), Martin has built texture and intrigue into a variety that all too often looks bland.

It has depth whilst still maintaining incredible freshness. Whether you are after something simple to smash back or a white with some detail you can sit 'n' sniff on, this is going to be right in your wheelhouse.

2021 Ravensworth Seven Months

The Ravensworth Seven Months is one of Bryan Martin's favourite wines to make. Excitingly, this year, the 2021 release is all estate grown fruit from Bryan's own vineyard in Murrumbateman.

The classic three-variety blend of Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer fermented on skins in ceramic egg for seven months (hence the name), with this extended skin contact adding all sorts of colour, texture and complexity.

This year's might be the best to date, a glorious mouthful of fruit that's slippery, grippy, textural and thought-provoking.

94 Points
"Seven months for pinot gris, gewurztraminer, riesling. A statement wine, of course. Whoa. That colour. Ruddy!.. Wildly complex. Texture is amazing. Intriguing. A serious wine here."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

2023 Ravensworth Gamay Noir

Bryan Martin continues to eke out some of the most interesting wines that NSW has to offer.

This is his Gamay Noir, and surprise, surprise, it is a belter. When a Tumbarumba grower called him up in 2015 with some fruit on offer, Martin jumped at the chance. And since the epic success of the first release, a wine that James Halliday said, "No gamay has previously been made equal to this in Australia", Martin has only refined his stylings further with this much-loved variety.

This falls under the Ravensworth heading of 'weird stuff'. It's definitely left of centre but boy is it dangerously gluggable.

If you're looking for something bright and fun to drink, this is going to thrill you to bits!

"There’s more to it than just another early drinking red, the structure and complexity will see it emerge as an impressive wine with a little age, if you can wait that long."
- Bryan Martin

2022 Ravensworth Regional Sangiovese

This wine from Bryan Martin is firmly ensconced as one of Australia's best-value Sangioveses, and as you'd expect from that reputation, this release is yet another cracker.

Bryan's Sangiovese has always had that nice balance between Sangiovese's natural savoury varietal character and sheer drinkability. It's bursting with fruit, finishing dry and savoury, as is the varietal signature.

This is an awesome, authentic Sangiovese from one of Canberra's most exciting producers. If you're looking for a top-quality wine to take along to your little local BYO pizza place, that's just what this was made for!

95 points & Top 100 Wines of the Year
"Don’t be put of by the light (and clear) colour, just revel in the perfumed red berries and flowers, and the mouth-watering, lipsmacking tension of the palate and incredibly long finish and aftertaste."
- James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

2022 Ravensworth Tinto

If you love your reds bright, fresh and gluggable then you'll adore this. The Ravensworth Tinto is a blend of Grenache, Tempranillo, Graciano, all the varieties bearing their Spanish names on the label.

The fruit was picked with acidity at front of mind, wild-fermented as whole berries, left on skins for a while and then pressed into old, neutral barriques. The wine is about freshness and balance, easy drinking with some structure and interest and Martin nails the brief. It's a great example of a Grenache blend outside of South Australia.

It's a joyous red wine and another massive win for Bryan Martin and Ravensworth.

95 Points
"Tinto is one of those wines you pour, smell, drink and say 'that’s delicious', immediately going in search of food to match."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Sangoivese in the pack was definitely worth it - not too sure about the other two wines, they were more of a let down. Highly recommend the Sangoivese - just go for that.

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
