About The Wine

Burn Cottage is one of the most celebrated Pinot Noirs in New Zealand.

A biodynamic vineyard from day one, this site has been groomed to perfection to produce Pinot Noir that can rival any in the world. Many believe this to be one of the most impressive versions of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy.

Planted in only 2003, each year the vines get older, the more intense and complex the wine gets.

It's the rare combination of power and finesse that sets the Burn Cottage Pinot Noir apart.

The 2016 vintage was voted the number one Central Otago Pinot Noir by Bob Campbell MW out of 98 wines tasted. He awarded it 98 points. This wine will be one of the prizes of your cellar for many years to come.

About Burn Cottage

Burn Cottage was founded by husband and wife team Marquis Sauvage and Dianne Sauvage in 2002.

They'd searched the 'New World' for the perfect site to plant a great Pinot Noir vineyard. This special site, a sheep farm in Central Otago, was where they chose to plant.

They employed a rock-star team to kick off the project. World-renowned, Burgundian-trained winemaker Ted Lemon came on board, leading biodynamic experts Peter Proctor and his partner Rachel Pomeroy were employed to consult on establishing the vines.

The vineyard has been biodynamic since inception. The focus, a single-minded mission to produce truly world-class Pinot Noir.

Critic Reviews

98Points
The Real Review

"This is a terrific Pinot Noir - great to drink now despite the sneaking feeling it's going to get even better with bottle age. Totally seductive ripe cherry, berry and plum flavours with added complexity from subliminal floral, spice, savoury and herb. The texture is to die for and the wine has impressive power as evidenced by a lingering finish that won't quit." - Bob Campbell MW (The Real Review)

95Points
The Wine Front

"Central Otago has its ups and downs, in terms of winemaking style, but Burn Cottage seems to regularly combine fine balance with high drinking appeal. Fragrant and rosy, scrub herb, plum and cherry, spice and subtle oak. Medium bodied, great flavour, smooth feel, and a ‘settled’ character to it, supple fine-grained tannin, slightly earthy and malty in the finish. Delightful. So well done." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

After a cool winter, there were also instances of frost fighting in the early parts of the season with some cold nights. Flowering was relatively quick, and it was windy at times through this period so the resulting bunches were quite open. Mild, favourable conditions prevailed through to late January, after which temperatures rose and a warm and dry February ensued. Apart from some scattered instances of rain, the remaining season continued warm and dry, and the ripening progressed well to picking in early April.
