2016 Koomilya CP Block Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale, SA

Impeccable, cellar-worthy Cabernet from a great site and a winemaking legend.

The interesting thing about 2016 is the profound tannin.

About The Wine

The Cabernet that grows on Steve Pannell's Koomilya vineyard is exceptional.

This block is planted to the old McLaren Vale clone of Cabernet. This particular clone yields very small, dense bunches of serious power and concentration. The wines that it produces consistently stand out from the pack - as evidenced by Steve's incredible success on the wine show circuit with wines made from this Cabernet - including two 'Bushing' Trophy wins at the McLaren Vale Wine Show since 2016.

These Cabernets will have a long life ahead of them. The stucture and density of the wine carrying the clear thumbprint of the vineyard.

A classic in the making, these Cabrnets will be sought after for many years, and perhaps decades, to come.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Additional Info

Sourced from a block between the JC and DC blocks on Koomilya’s South East facing slope planted by Jill and Don Cant in 1975 and machine pruned for over 25 years. I have slowly worked the vines back from poor health since purchase in 2012 and it is now one of the few Cabernet Sauvignon blocks in McLaren Vale to be ‘Cane Pruned’.

Planted to the old McLaren Vale clone; an extremely low-yieding, small bunched and small berry clone producing extraordinary wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Koomilya has consistently contributed to many trophy winning wines including two ‘Bushing’ trophies since 2016.

Hand Harvested on the 12th March, ten days on skins before a gentle press and sent to French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Bottled on the 28th of November 2017 after nineteen months in barrel.

The Wine Front

"This, and the 2017 Temp Touriga, are the only releases from Koomilya until 2021. If the wines aren’t up to scratch, they don’t get released. The CP block planted in 1975, and recently reworked, and given some love since 2012.Classic Aussie red in many ways, but reference that in a more old school way, perhaps. Blackcurrant, liquorice, raspberry liqueur, some exotic spice, a minor amount of truffle and polished wood. It’s juicy and supple, tannin is tucked tight into sheets of intense and subtly sweet small berried fruit, there’s a savoury sort of umami/nori thing happening too, and the finish is long and slick with ripe tannin. Quiet authority here, and it’s a wine that’s not trying too hard to be anything other than what it is, which, in short, is very bloody good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
