About The Wine

The Shiraz By Farr is a Shiraz made like a Pinot Noir.

This is from vines planted in 1994 as part of Gary Farr's original plantings. In most vintages, a small amount of Viognier is either co-fermented or back blended to enhance fragrance and texture. It's a soft, seductive wine that really turns it on.

The 2017 vintage conditions suited the Farr Shiraz vines very well. Nick Farr believes this to be the family's most 'Rhone-like' Shiraz to date.

Silky, slippery and spicy, this is a wonderful expression of Shiraz from a great Australian vineyard.

About By Farr / Farr Rising

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in the country.

He was responsible for taking Bannockburn Vineyards in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is considered by many as Australia's leading producer of those same varieties.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier.

With Gary's son Nick now pulling the winemaking reigns alongside his father, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

Additional Info

From the Producer

The Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone.

All fruit is hand-picked from the VSP trellising, with 20 per cent left as whole bunches in the fermentation. Most years we co-ferment between 2 and 4 per cent viognier with the shiraz, the date determining whether the former is co-fermented and bled back. It is a natural fermentation, with the fruit remaining in the tank for 19 days before pressing. Shiraz sees 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent being new, and is bottled under vacuum.

One of our most Rhone like Shiraz’s, more complex herb over the fruit than usual - this has alluring depth. Something a little elusive drawing you in – perhaps the earthy beautiful Shiraz complexity (all kinds of cherries and some mocca and meaty notes) complicated by heady white floral Viognier perfume. Lifted fresh fruit strikes the palate straight away - plush in feel but there's a lovely core density - not chewy, but substantial like firm fruit flesh, with good energy chasing it through and keeping it lithe. Fine tannins; finish bright with fresh flavour and dash of creamy oak.

Blend : Shiraz (96%), Viognier (4%)
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2035
Bottle Size : 750ml
