About The Pack
Here's a selection of crisp, cool whites that will get you through the sweltering Summer months.
The pack is filled with a range of styles and a mix of varieties, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they are just too damn easy to drink.
2018 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Riesling
Two old Eden Valley Riesling vineyards combine here under the guidance of Domenic Torzi.
The 2018 Frost Dodger is quintessential Eden Valley Riesling - lithe, light but full of flavour. Torzi left the wine on lees for eight weeks prior to racking to build in more weight and texture but the end result is as pure and pristine as any Riesling you are likely to see out of 2018.
It feels dart-like and über refreshing. A seriously good value wine given its potential for ageing up to a decade or more and it's stellar drinking in its youth.
Gary Walsh rated it a whopping 95 points, fully agreeing that "It’s always a good wine, but I feel 2018 is extra-good."Read more about 2018 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Riesling
2018 Simao & Co. Sauvignon Blanc
This is a lively Sauvignon Blanc that comes at you head on.
Simon Killeen takes every precaution to keep his much-loved "Savvy-Boo" as bright and as clean as possible. Pressed early and gently, the wine is crystal clear as it runs to the tank. A small portion goes to barrel before being blended back into the wine for some added mid-palate flesh and succulence.
It's chilled and kept on lock-down until it's gently fined before going to bottle. The desired end result is Sauvignon Blanc which is fresh and crisp with a little more to it than meets the eye.
Simon nails the style, it's excellent drinking.Read more about 2018 Simao & Co. Sauvignon Blanc
2016 Main & Cherry Grüner Veltliner
Barossa Valley and Shiraz. Hunter Valley Semillon. Adelaide Hills and Gruner Veltliner?
Who knows, but there are a fair amount of very good examples popping up from this part of the country, just like this one from Mike Sexton and his boutique wine label, Main & Cherry.
The 2016 vintage of this wine was fermented long and slow at low temperatures and sat on lees for six weeks prior to ferment to slowly enrich the texture and it's worked a treat.
This won a Gold Medal at the 2016 Alternative Varieties Wine Show and was also awarded 95 points by James Halliday.
This is a very good version of the variety, both varietal and easy to drink. If you want to check out this interesting Austrian variety, this would be a very good place to start.Read more about 2016 Main & Cherry Grüner Veltliner
2018 De Iuliis Semillon
Year after year De Iuliis's early released Semillon is one of the Hunter Valley's true bargains.
We love Mike De Iuliis's classy range of wines and it's great to see such good value from the Hunter. Where some of Mike's more premium Semillon releases are built for contemplation over several years in the cellar, this wine is built for contemplation over several seconds in your glass.
Light, fruit-driven and utterly smashable, this is Hunter Semillon made for drinking, not thinking.Read more about 2018 De Iuliis Semillon
2018 Unico Zelo Jade & Jasper Fiano
The Unico Zelo owner/winemaking dynamic duo of Brendan and Laura Carter are hugely passionate about Fiano, and they wholeheartedly believe in this variety's suitability to Australia's climate and culture.
So do we, it's a winner.
This comes from the ancient sandy limestone soils on the iconic Ricca Terra Farms vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. Like in previous years it's a wonderfully textural wine, but I reckon this release seems a little more balanced and even clean-cut than the '17.
It looks the goods. All up it's delicious to drink, perfectly built for enjoying with food and great value for money.Read more about 2018 Unico Zelo Jade & Jasper Fiano
2018 Gilbert Blanc
This is a delish little white made for approachability and slurpability.
This year's white blend is a bricolage of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Sourced from the cool climate vineyards in Orange, this is an easy drinking expression of an Alsace style white.
The three super aromatic varieties just work so well together.
Lively and refreshing, this will be a picnicers delight and something perfect to have on hand for your next BYO expedition.Read more about 2018 Gilbert Blanc
