Description

Steve Pannell's love for Nebbiolo runs deep. It lead him on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Nebbiolo, the famed hills of Barolo in Italy. He came back to Australia with a vision to craft Nebb to challenge the best in the world and he is making a great fist of it.

Pannell only releases this wine in the best vintages. Coming from the cooler Adelaide Hills region, he has sculpted a beautifully perfumed, structured and rustic wine that is more akin to the similarly styled Nebbiolos of Italy.

Like all great Nebbiolo it's brilliant with food, and with its epic structure, it will continue to age gracefully from "now until Armageddon". This is widely regarded as one of Australia's premier Nebbiolos, and if you love this variety, then this is an essential addition to your collection.

"There really aren't many places in the world outside of Piedmont where you can coax Nebbiolo into something that is both fine and varietal ….. I think this vineyard in Gumeracha is one of the very few places in Australia if not the world that this project could work" - S.C. Pannell

The 2016 vintage was a vintage of two distinct halves. Winter & Spring were exceptionally dry & warm, with irrigation beginning earlier than I can ever recall. A number of rainstorms quickly changed everything, making 2016 one of the wettest and mildest ripening periods. These cool, wet conditions saved our vines. All of the red wines from 2016 are tannic and not dissimilar to 1996 and 2006 and should make the wines long lived.

93 Points - "Distinct character of Nebbiolo, but from the Hills. One of the great, and more progressive thinkers in Australian wine is Steve. If only there were more like him. Bright young thing. Raspberry cordial, blackcurrant, cut fennel, spice and earth, a rose petal perfume emerging. Medium bodied, good volume of flavour, though light in footprint, with a translucent quality, fine cocoa/graphite tannin, cool acidity, and a well-defined finish of excellent length. It has verity and interest. It will age surely, and well. You can enjoy it now, but its best years are ahead of it. Really like this wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 Points - Number 95 in the 2019 Top 100 Australian Wines - JamesSuckling.com

S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
