From just a single hectare of vines, the 2024 release gave a meagre four barrels – barely 100 dozen bottles in total. Scarcity aside, what’s in the glass more than justifies the reputation.

Brian Franklin has been making wine here since the late ’90s, honing his craft over two decades of vintages in Gevrey-Chambertin with the Charlopin family. That Burgundian influence shows, but this is no copycat. The fruit comes from a wild, windswept site on Tasmania’s east coast, and the wines carry that imprint – saline, taut, and built on natural acidity.

The 2024 Chardonnay is tightly coiled and deeply intense. The nose is precise, almost understated, but the palate bursts open with layers of ripe citrus, stone fruit, struck flint, and a touch of creamy oak. There’s richness, yes, but it’s harnessed by line and length rather than weight. The texture is superb – bright, chalky, and energetic – with the kind of balance that promises graceful ageing over the next decade.

For a vineyard that started life in the early ’90s as a fisherman’s side project, Apsley Gorge has become one of the great Chardonnay producers of the country. This 2024 release is a stunning return to form, described by Brian himself as "a return to the good old days, plus some."

It pours a deep ruby red, full of promise. While Brian bottles without fining or filtration to preserve maximum flavour, the wine remains bright and crystal clear. The nose is deep and mysterious, packed with ripe Pinot fruit and devoid of any bracken or green characters.

On the palate, it is classic Apsley Gorge. It is textured, mouth-filling and rich, with a firm savoury edge that has become the hallmark of the vineyard. A long, persistent finish is carried by fresh acidity that makes the wine sing.
