- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
One for the Grenache lover with a penchant for the prettier side of the variety.
The fruit from this 60+-year-old vineyard in McLaren Vale has been carefully guided by winemaking husband and wife team Luke Growden and Caleigh Hunt into a lovely, delicate yet intriguing style of Grenache.
With a judicious amount of whole bunch and a focus on fruit rather than oak, this is a vibrant expression that is impossible to stop drinking.
As with all of Luke and Caliegh’s wines, this was only a tiny production. They produced a mere 66 dozen of this wine, which is a terrible shame considering all its lovable qualities.
What It Tastes Like
Cloudy dark ruby colour in the glass. Rose petal, cinnamon, rhubarb, gentle natural feel. Feels unfettered. Plums and cherries. Good tension. Long fine sandy tannin and very good length. Plenty of personality and charisma. Cool Grenache.
From a single vineyard planted in the 1950’s this medium-bodied wine is all about pretty aromatics, texture and savoury tannins. Hand-picked, wild fermented with 30% whole bunches. Kept on skins for four weeks before basket pressing straight to old French oak. The wine matured on full lees before being gravity racked to bottle, un-fined and unfiltered.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2024
About the Producer
This dynamic couple were named as the Best New Act at the 2015 Young Guns of Wine Awards. After falling in love during vintage almost a decade ago, they have set about crafting a boutique label around their small family. Their wines are made in minuscule quantities, often no more than 30 dozen at a time, and their raw quality and undeniable personality make them very highly sort after.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
