- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This Shiraz is a brilliant example of what the award winning wines of Yangarra are all about. 'PF' stands for 'Preservative Free', as it is not only biodynamically grown but put together in the winery with absolutely no additives whatsoever. The Natural Wine movement is a contentious one, but this wine would have to be one its poster boys. This is a fresh and lively style of Shiraz ready for immediate enjoyment and to quote Campbell Mattinson on his appraisal of a previous vintage "a great red to rip into".
What it Tastes Like
It's vivacious and jubilant for a McLaren Vale Shiraz. Pops from the glass with plum, licorice, boysenberry and soft pepper tones. It's juicy to taste, ripe but with solid, sandy tannins. So youthful. So unadorned. So much guilt free fun in a bottle.
93 points "Pure fruit. Peter Fraser. Preservative Free. All fit. Absolutely no additions, only filtration before bottling. Clean as a whistle, fabulous colour, brimming with dark fruit, choc-wheaten biscuits, spice and crunchy acidity." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
There are 100 hectares of vineyards at Yangarra in 35 individual blocks. These vineyards are spread amongst an extra 70 hectares of creeks, native vegetation and native corridors. Our estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation. Shiraz was hand-picked from select blocks and received via a belt elevator (rather than a screw hopper which macerates the skins) and only de-stemmed. Whole berries were double sorted before being lightly broken and then placed into small open-top fermenters. No additives were used for the wine’s entire production. As with all of our wines, after a few days cold soaking, we allowed natural yeast fermentation and used a careful regime of plunging, and drain and returns to get the right balance of extraction. The wine was carefully pressed after 11 days on skins and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation prior to bottling, with no additions or fining, just filtration.

About the Producer
Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!
They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. For reds, Grenache is their flag bearer, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. His takes on Viognier are as good as any in the land. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block. A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
