- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Wickhams Road range is widely regarded as some of Australia’s best value vino.
Made by the perennial bargain Yarra producer, Hoddles Creek, these wines hugely over deliver in the bang for you buck department.
Described by Winsor Dobbin as “the best sub-$20 cool-climate pinot noir in the country”, the Yarra Valley Pinot Noir might be the best buy/most sought after of all the releases. If you drink Pinot, this should be your sub $20 mid-week staple.
It won’t be around for long. This is a case buy, pure and simple.
What It Tastes Like
Gamey, earthy, right away, this sucks you in. More serious than the Gippsland. The ever-so-fine, powdery tannin sets the framework for the dark berries, savoury and spice to dance within. So, so, so, good for the price. A serious Pinot drinker’s quaffer.
91 points. “The volume of aroma and flavour here is impressive. It rises up to greet you and keeps the show going all the way through to a satisfying finish. Woodsmoke, forest berries, a touch of reduction, garden herbs. There’s flow, there’s flourish, there’s flavour. The fruit just has that slight touch of sweetness, in a positive way, and yet pinot’s inherent savouriness abounds. Super value.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
“Here we go again. I invariably have at least one or two wines under the 1er Yarra Valley, Hoddles Creek or Wickhams Road labels awaiting a review slot. All three labels belong to the d’Anna family in the Yarra Valley are bywords for both quality and value. This is, I believe, the best sub-$20 cool-climate pinot noir in the country; fruit-driven and startlingly sessionable. Think dark fruit, 20% whole bunches in the ferment, 20 days on skins and a wine that has been bottled without filtration or fining. This is juicy and spicy with soft tannins and is ridiculously good for the price.”
- Winsor Dobbin (Wine of the Week)
A combination of Upper Yarra Valley fruit and some experimental blocks off Hoddles.
The wine sees about 20% whole bunches in the ferment to give spice and fine tannins. Spends about 20 days on skins and is bottled without fining or filtration.

About the Producer
Hoddles Creek lay a serious claim to being one of the best value producers in Australia. Led by the extremely hardworking winemaking guru Franco D’Anna, Hoddles craft wonderful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in particular that seriously overdeliver at all price-points.
The wines are all crafted from fruit grown on their family owned vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley. A must try for Yarra Valley fans and bargain hunters alike!
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
