- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
If you look at the slew of incredible reviews around this small Yarra Valley producer, one word pops up in almost every single one. Value. From their elite 1er and Hoddles Creek Estate labels through to their Wickhams Road range, not an ounce of quality is compromised at any tier. For the money, all the wines punch well and truly above their weight. Their 2016 Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a beautiful example of what they are about. Clean, elegant and precise wines that make you go, "How much did you pay for this?!" This is consistently one of the country's most excellent Chardonnays in its price range and this year is no different.
What it Tastes Like
Lemons, white peach, some gloss of oak and good balance with a kick of tart citrus in the back.Lots of potential. More open and approachable than the 2015 on release. Crisp and flavourful on the palate, the finish is long and balanced. Good buying here.
95 points "Hand-picked, crushed and destemmed, fermented and matured in French oak (20% new) for 8 months. The vineyard has been managed by Hoddles Creek since '03. Quite obviously, the difference between this and its Gippsland sibling comes from the terroir. This is lighter on its feet, more elegant and longer on the palate; the flavour wheel has all of those from its sibling, adding nuances of pear and green apple." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 91 points. "It’s a subtle wine of quite composure and grace, and what’s more, it’s alarmingly easy to drink. White peach, citrus, almond and a slight sweet green top note. Light bodied, fresh and delicate, cool acidity and flinty texture, a little green olive in the mix, with raw almond and white peach on a cool fresh finish. Delicious! Now or later." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Sourced from Vineyards in Healesville and the Upper Yarra. The Healesville component gives some mid palate weight, whilst the upper Yarra provides finesse and the long acid drive. Made with the same exacting standards as our own estate grown Chardonnay, this Wickhams Rd Chardonnay is foward, lively and balanced.
Closure: Screw Cap

About the Producer
Hoddles Creek lay a serious claim to being one of the best value producers in Australia. Led by the extremely hardworking winemaking guru Franco D’Anna, Hoddles craft wonderful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in particular that seriously overdeliver at all price-points.
The wines are all crafted from fruit grown on their family owned vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley. A must try for Yarra Valley fans and bargain hunters alike!
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
