- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Young winemaker Angus Vinden with a fresh take on a classic wine style here. This is not your average Hunter Valley Shiraz.
Angus describes this as a ‘nouveau’ style of red. It’s a light, frisky Shiraz grown on his family estate. A world away from the leathery, savoury traditional Shiraz the region is famous for, this is a young jovial red perfect for drinking right now, even with a slight chill!
Looking for interesting new things from the Hunter Valley, this fresh look at Shiraz should be right up your alley.
What It Tastes Like
You’d never pick this for a Hunter red. It’s lightish in colour and smells of fresh raspberry and sweet cherry, warm tilled earth. Soft, powdery tannins frame the vibrant red fruit in the palate. It’s light on its feet. It’s full of energy. Great drinking.
Sourced from my family’s estate vineyard, planted in 1995 gown on red clay and the Howard family’s Somerset Vineyard, planted in 1970 on red volcanic clay soils, over weathered limestone in Pokolbin. Picked in Mid February, the wine is made in homage to taditional hunter burgndy, with wild yeast and lees contact. The age and character of the old vines shine through in this lighter stle of Shiraz. A soft, fruit forward, elegant wine, made in taditional methods; cold soaked, ferented cool in open concrete ferenters, basket pressed and aged in French oak for 12 months (25% new). Great early drinking over the next 5 years.

The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
