- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Three friends started the Vanguardist label with a view to create wines which are "forever striving to unlock the imagination and inspire those with curious palates…." This takes Clare Valley Riesling in a different direction than most. It's built of several fruit components: some fermented in stainless, some in old oak, some spent a month on skins. The goal was to produce a wine with more textural intrigue than the usual offerings from the region. Mission accomplished in the 2016 release. It's smashability factor high, as well as the quality. Super drinking now or in a few years time.
What it Tastes Like
"It’s certainly a textural style. It has the zip and the zest but it floats softly through the mouth. Spice and citrus zest flavours aplenty. A touch of bready, reductive funk. Plenty to like." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
92 points. "This is really pure, lemony and dry with a lovely delicacy. There’s some mineral character here, with an almost spicy undercurrent to the citrus fruits. Lovely detailed finish." - Jamie Goode (Wine Anorak) 90 points. "It’s certainly a textural style. It has the zip and the zest but it floats softly through the mouth. Harvested in mid-February under perfect conditions. A portion was de-stemmed and crushed before pressing and cold settling in tank. This was transferred to tank and inoculated with a ‘pied de cuve’ from the same vineyard. A cold (10-120) ferment took place in tank and made up about 75% of the final blend. The other components were made up equally from a direct basket press to barrel ferment, and a portion that spent around 30 days on skins. This gives the wine greater power of flavour, and texture, whilst maintaining a slightly more classic Clare Riesling style. This was then followed by a few rackings by gravity, and final blending before being bottled under gravity without fining or filtration.
