- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Berry Blossom Rosé is a cheeky little number.
The majority of this release comes from 25-year-old Nebbiolo vines in the famous sub-region of Polish Hill River in the Clare Valley, this is a seriously un-serious wine.
Rosés are meant to be fun and smashable, that’s exactly what this is. That’s not to say it doesn’t have some class to it, but it is just a good, honest drink, and one of the best we’ve seen in here for a while now.
As the U.Z. team puts it, “It’s a wine of sharing, enjoyment, frivolity - and freedom.” and we couldn’t agree more!
What It Tastes Like
Wild strawberry’s and cherries and a smidge of the Neb spice on the nose. In the mouth it is crunchy and clean with a soft, gentle creaminess trough the finish. Finishes with glace cherry and spice.
It’s pretty hard to go past the chance to craft a wine like this when you’re presented with a incredible site like Polish Hill River, marbled with blue/grey slate and planted to 25 year-old Nebbiolo vines, of 4 different clones - at 450 metres elevation.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2017
About the Producer
Unico Zelo is the project of winemaking couple Brendan and Laura Carter. In their words, their aim is to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines” and “Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.”
Since bursting onto the scene in 2014 with their eye-catching, outrageously good value alternative vino, the Carters have spread their wings and their range. They now make a large suite of wines, including single vineyard examples of Fiano, Nero d’Avola and Nebbiolo. They are one of the most dynamic winemaking duos in the Adelaide Hills.
The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
