- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Unico Zelo husband-and-wife team Brendan and Laura Carter are arguably Australia's most passionate Fiano advocates. Of the pair's three single vineyard Fianos, this is the 'Grand Cru', the wine that Brendan (who occasionally operates under the #FianoMan alias) told us is "our baby, the Fiano that receives the most attention". Coming from cooler high altitude Kersbrook sub-region in the Adelaide Hills, the 'Alluvium' is the most structural and no doubt age-worthy of the trio. In the Carter's own words, "it's our special-occasion Fiano, one for the cellar and one for the table." This is Fiano at another level. Enjoy.
What it Tastes Like
Subtle notes of honeysuckle and grilled nuts on the nose, but this is all about the palate and structure - almost Riesling-esque in its incredible minerally acid. Defintiely some quartz influence there from these unique soils. Just ripe stone fruits, hints of sherbet and citrus and Fiano's trademark texture and mouthfeel. Finishes long and fresh - it really leaves an impression. All class.

We've always been enamoured by Fiano's ability to age - indeed courtesy to it's tendency to retain it's acidity during ripening, presenting a wine with incredibly poise and tension. It's in the Adelaide Hills where we find this achievable, sitting on quartz-shot clay in the alpine Northern Adelaide Hills. It's our special-occasion Fiano, one for the cellar and one for the table.

About the Producer
Unico Zelo is the project of winemaking couple Brendan and Laura Carter. In their words, their aim is to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines” and “Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.”
Since bursting onto the scene in 2014 with their eye-catching, outrageously good value alternative vino, the Carters have spread their wings and their range. They now make a large suite of wines, including single vineyard examples of Fiano, Nero d’Avola and Nebbiolo. They are one of the most dynamic winemaking duos in the Adelaide Hills.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
