Two Tonne Tasmania has a simple philosophy; small parcels, big love.
The TMV Pinot Noir is meant for earlier consumption than the Dog and Wolf Pinot Noir. A glimpse at the vintage for the Tamar Valley region. But make no mistake, this is not your average entry level Pinot, this has an edge to it, a personality all of its own. The 2016 release of the Two Tonne Tasmania TMV Pinot Noir is a ripper.
A cracking wine and a great representation of the quality being produced by a new wave of Tasmanian winemaking rock-stars. Stocks are limited on this release, get into it quick!
What It Tastes Like
Light, fresh, ethereal Pinot Noir, built on a base of fine emery board tannin. Fresh red fruits, elegance and prettiness in toe. There’s some floral notes, lavender and sage. Perky mouthfeel and sweet cherry fruit which leads to a campari and gently bitter finish. Refreshing and delicious Pinot Noir here.
94 points. “TMV is Tamar Valley to EST the East Coast iteration released in 2016 under this Two Metre Tall label. Ricky Evans, winemaker, is a thoughtful, rising star out of the north of Taswegia, working by day at Bay of Fires, by night tending to this excellent start up. Here he sources from two vineyards, Swan Bay and Relbia. The wine sees low new oak, some portions go longer on skins, there’s 25% whole bunch, and is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
This is lovely stuff. First sip and away you go. Evocative sour and maraschino cherry scents, maybe kirsch, sprigs of dried herbs, some brambly-undergrowth scents. The palate has a cool, red fruit feel in the pomegranate-cranberry zone, with mouthwatering, rough satin texture, sleek and lacy, long and so fine, finishing in a barely there pucker. A wine you’d call ‘detailed’. It’s pure pinot, on ice. Stunner.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
The TMV16 Pinot Noir features the fundamental components of our house style. It has a whole bunch backbone, 20% inclusion, which works in combination with a fresh, fruit driven lift due to partial carbonic maceration. The wine was worked very lightly during fermentation, receiving only pump overs until a few light plunges prior to pressing well before dry. Fermentation was completed in French oak barriques, 20% new. It is soft and textural on the palate, a result of lees contact for the whole duration of maturation. This wine received no finings, minimal sulphur dioxide, and bottled unfiltered.

About the Producer
Two Tonne Tasmania
Two Tonne Tasmania is the brainchild of Ricky Evens. With the slogan ‘small parcels, big love’, Ricky’s approach is all about growing pristine, healthy fruit, harvesting at the right time, and then having to do as little as possible in the winery thereafter. Since their serendipitous entry into the much sort after sub-region of the Tamar Valley in 2013, their first few releases have made quite a few waves. Pinot is Ricky’s game, and he plays hard-ball.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
