Torzi Matthews have Trebbiano (Ugni Blanc) vines planted 113 years ago.
A remarkable thing, these old vine are something the Barossa wears as a badge of honour. Here, winemaker Dominic Torzi gives this old vine fruit the full works in the winery.
The fruit is left for 12 hours on its skins, fermented wild in barrel and matured in oak for 11 months prior to bottling looking to “build texture, weight and complexity.”
It’s a wild wine full of layers and nuance. If you are hunting for something a little bit different, this is it.
What It Tastes Like
“Sandalwood, nougat, touch of sweet scented varnish, rose petal, lolly bag scents. Madness, but kind of like it. Toastiness in the palate, nougat-marzipan, lick of sweet fruit, soft, lemony finish. It’s got plenty of character, feels a touch overworked in its multiple personalities, not quite coherent in that way. Still, a very good glass of wine and it really grew on me.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
89 points. “Wild child here. So much going on. Complexity is a byword. It’s just hectic, but in such a good, fun, interesting way. Feels like the whole winery has had a go at it, but in the good kind of way.

Native family white grape of Molise Abruzzi dry grown here in the Barossa Valley from a single vineyard dating back to 1905.
Hand picked, crushed into 3 ton open fermenter for 12hr skin contact then basket pressed to tank for natural settling for 2 days then racked off heavy lees leaving behind some fluffy light lees for natural ferment in seasoned French oak for 4 weeks with lees aging for a further 11 months in oak to build texture, weight and complexity. A lovely delicate and yet very complex dry styling with intense custard apple, citrus florals, cashew nuts, brioche, lemon and grapefruit. On the palate: zesty lemon, nuts, savoury bay leaf-like, grapefruit, and orchard fruits that persists to a savoury delightful finish most suited to shell fish and white meats.

About the Producer
With a family history steeped in European custom, the wines of Dominic Torzi are made in a traditional, low-interventionist way. Grown and hand picked on their cool, marginal site on the cusp of Barossa and Eden Valley, these are refined and honest wines crafted with a European sensibility. With an array of alternate varieties as well as the traditional Barossa staples, the Torzi Matthews wines are some of the most interesting and best value in the region.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
