- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
As the McLaren Vale region heads more in the direction of 'premium wine', those little $20-$25 gems are becoming harder to find. Thankfully, ex-Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead has made it his mission to keep the quality high and the price low with his own label, Three Dark Horses and doing a mighty fine job of it. Here Matt combines the charms of Grenache and Touriga into one seriously slurpable drink. It's flush with fleshy fruit, savoury spice and loaded with character. An all-purpose, simply delicious red for all occasions.
What it Tastes Like
Super aromatics of wild flowers, roses, violet, mulberry, blueberry, turkish delight and peppery spices. Lots going on. There's plenty to slurp on too. It's mid-weight but plump with great vibrancy. Smashability and versatility dialed up to 11.

About the Producer
Three Dark Horses
Three Dark Horses is the passion project of ex-Coriole winemaker, Matt Broomhead. Together with his father and grandfather, the three have embarked on a mission to make some of McLaren Vale’s best value wines. Using mainly Rhone varieties, they are endeavouring to produce “small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character.”
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
