This is the wine that started it all for Syd Bradford and his Thick as Thieves wine label. "After 10 years in winemaking, working for some of the Yarra’s top producers during that time, Syd’s oenological clock started ticking and he decided the time was right to make his own babies." The Aloof Alpaca was the first wine of his own creation. It's Arneis made with barrel time and foot-stomping; he throws everything but the kitchen sink at it. It's a lively and powerful version of the variety ideal suited to all sorts of food and good times with friends.
What it Tastes Like
Smells of basil, honeysuckle and figs with a hint of toastiness in the fray. It kicks in the palate - bristling acidity framed by a gentle creaminess and a soft powdery texture. Powers through the finish. I've not seen Arneis like this before.

whole bunches are put in the cool room for 12 hrs and then foot stomped, dry iced and returned to the cool room for 24 hrs skin contact. The whole bunches are then pressed straight to seasoned barriques with full solids. The barrels ferment spontaneously, or ‘wild’, and are allowed to warm to around 26’C and then sulphured when sugar dry. Early bottling in August to lock in freshness.

Not having to answer to bean counters and marketing departments, Thick as Thieves has the freedom to experiment with alternative varieties and styles which means Syd gets to make interesting wines that he loves to drink, not wines that simply sell or are in vogue.
