This offering from Syd Bradford combines the structure and perfume of some wonderful Yarra Valley Pinot with the plush, juicy red berries of King Valley Gamay.
It’s jovial, jubey and little wild - the perfect red blend for drinking during spring and summer. Syd recommends a slight chill before drinking which is a top tip from the man who made it.
The 95 points from James Halliday well and truly justified, the drinkability here is through the roof.
What It Tastes Like
Red and blue berries with a cheeky spice to the aromatics. It’s brazen and flighty and dangerously easy to drink. If light-med bodied reds float your boat, this is a winner.

Syd Bradford’s use of whole clusters has become more deft over time, imparting a savoury edge to the flowing fruit rather than overwhelming it. Light in weight, belying the persistence of fruit flavours, this brims with danger… as in too easy to knock back in large drafts! A lick of Amaro on the finish teases out more textural wealth. Mellifluous.”

A blend of Yarra Valley Pinot (68%) and King Valley Gamay (32%).
The MV6, 114 and 115 Yarra Pinot had a 4 day cold soak and a 100% whole bunch fermentation as well as some carbonic maceration; King Valley Gamay also had a long cold soak but was mostly destemmed. Both the Pinot Noir and Gamay had indigenous ferments with minimal plunging and both had some barrel ferment inputs. Natural malo-lactic fermentation. No fining or filtration.

Thick as Thieves is a one-man, Yarra based operation and that one-man is a guy named Syd.
After 10 years in winemaking, working for some of the Yarra’s top producers during that time, Syd’s oenological clock started ticking and he decided the time was right to make his own babies.
Not having to answer to bean counters and marketing departments, Thick as Thieves has the freedom to experiment with alternative varieties and styles which means Syd gets to make interesting wines that he loves to drink, not wines that simply sell or are in vogue.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change.
