One of the most interesting things about the natural winemaking movement is that a wine doesn't always turn out the way you expect. If you're not adding, fiddling with or correcting the wine, the characteristics you get in the end might just surprise you. This beautiful Shiraz from The Other Right is one out of the box. The fruit is from Sellicks Hill in McLaren Vale, Alex Schulkin and Galit Shachaf picked it a full ripeness. Should be a big, rich fruit bomb, right? Well, not quite. As the wine has _Unfurled_ in the bottle, unmistakable cool climate characteristics have arisen. "Strangely for a Shiraz from McLaren Vale, it's more on the cool climate side: restrained fruit and unrestrained spice. Dark cherries, pain au chocolat and lots of pepper." It's still a juicy, heartwarming Shiraz, but maybe a little different to what you might expect from the region. You can't always get what you want... But if you try sometimes you just might find... You get what you need.... Only 75 dozen made.
What it Tastes Like
It's ripe and juicy with silky plum and blueberry notes, smells of warm blueberry pie and dark coco. Slips through the mouth, all chewy and plump. Fine chalky tannin edge the deep, inky fruit. Such a great expression of Shiraz, pure and unadulterated. Great stuff.
SHIRAZ, SELLICKS HILL We really love this vineyard; grown with so much care - no sprays of any kind and a lot of attention to every vine. The results, naturally, never disappoint. It’s most certainly a Shiraz, and a big, dark one, too, albeit very gently so. A great companion for an outdoor adventure, sitting by the fire on a starry night. Grown by Ernst Sigel. The Other Right is a fantastic artisan producer from McLaren Vale. Winemaker Alex Schulkin and his partner Galit are crafting clean, premium, natural wines from organically vineyards in the Vale and Adelaide Hills. The Wines are excellent examples of quality with a natural philosophy.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
