- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Tom Ward knows how to bang out a bargain white wine, and his 2016 Swinging Bridge Pinot Gris is just that.
While Orange and Swinging Bridge especially might be better known for Chardonnay, the region has enormous potential for other aromatic white grape varieties, like Pinot Gris.
The fruit is picked in the cool of the morning to preserve the freshness of the berries, with some skin contact, old oak and time on lees all used to enhance texture.
Pinot Gris lovers should gobble this up.
What It Tastes Like
Quince, pear juice, a little musk and spice. It’s lightly texture with sweet juicy fruit that finishes dry and crisp. A crunch and lovely spice dappled finish. Good honest Gris. Crowd pleaser.
The grapes were picked during the cool of the morning to retain the fruit freshness and pressed immediately to limit the time on skins before fermentation over an extended period. Whilst capturing the cool climate pear and spice flavours, texture was built into the finished wine through its time on lees.

About the Producer
Swinging Bridge is one of Orange’s most exciting boutique producers. Owned by Tom Ward, who also heads up the New South Wales Wine Association, they are pumping out some fantastic cool climate wines, that all punch well above their weight.
The wine scene in Orange is alive and kicking. With each vintage that passes the bar of quality is raised again and again. Pinot Noir is a potential champion for the region but for now Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet are the flag bearers. The cool climate and the high altitude vineyards are producing wines of finesse and class and there is some ripping value to be had in this region.
Pinot Gris is a variety that can take on many forms. In one instance it’s crisp, racy and light as in the case of Pinot Grigio, the next it’s round and voluptuous, and sometimes it presents as pinkish or even red! This versatility makes it an incredibly interesting grape. It loves skin contact, it loves lees stirring, it loves anything a winemaker can throw at it, but always it will show lovely perfume, tasty fruit and excellent mouthfeel. It might just be the most underestimated white variety in the country.
