- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is one of the first wines to be released from Sam Connew’s own vineyard, the Palisander vineyard, in Coal River Valley, TAS.
It’s an exciting development for Sam and her brand, now having viticultural control over her fruit. The first releases are excellent. The 2016 season was warmer than usual for Tasmania, the acids in this Riesling less severe and the more generous in fruit flavour.
The thumbprint of Tasmanian terroir shines through regardless, but there’s possibly more joy to had in this wine in its youth than usual. Classy Riesling with a plethora of brilliant reviews and a lot of personality.
What It Tastes Like
Green apples and a golden lemony tangy. There’s a generosity to the fruit to complement the crunch and mineral aspect to the wine - gives it lovely balance and flow. There’s a savoury element to the finish, lightly herbal like lemon myrtle tea. Great stuff. Superior drinkability for Tasmanian Riesling.
97 points. “This wine from a small producer in southern Tasmania is fermented in stainless steel, old oak and a ceramic egg. The complex vinification has worked perfectly — it has intense lime juice and lime zest flavours, but even more striking is the opulent juiciness of the mouthfeel before the cleansing acidity on the finish.”
- James Halliday
96 points. “Palish colour and a lifted, high-toned scent that reminds of mandarin and honey - a gorgeous array of aromas, clean and fresh and finely honed. The palate is intense and delicate, refined and frisky, with wonderful vitality which is a sheer joy to taste. The back-palate and finish are loaded with juicy fruit and mouth-watering acidity in perfect harmony. Impressive wine.’“
- Huon Hooke
94 points. “It has that extra sizzle. This is a riesling to lap up and enjoy – as you marvel at it. There’s a slip of sweetness and plenty of citrussy acidity; there’s a floral abundance but also gentle input from sweeter, crystallised fruits. It both sears and seduces, and manages to do it in harmony.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
“The 2016 Stargazer Riesling in genuinely thrilling, its bright citrus and green-apple characters energised by a thrilling and finely poised natural acidity that hums through the wine like a struck tuning fork.”
- Nick Ryan
“Along with hedgerow aromatics and bright citrus and Granny Smith apple notes, you’ll find river pebble and quartz minerality and some fruit sweetness. The wine is a result of whole-bunch and wild ferments and was matured in a mix of stainless steel, ceramic eggs and older oak. Downright delicious, but it might pay to be quick as only 4533 bottles were produced.”
