- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
While Spinifex has certainly amassed a formidable reputation for producing some of the country's leading examples of Rhone-inspired reds and whites, Peter Schell is no slouch with when it comes to knocking out a top-notch example of an emerging variety either. This is a single vineyard Tempranillo from the foothills of the Barossa Valley. It's picked early, destemmed, fermented wild and bottled without fining or filtration. The first release of a straight Tempranillo from the Spinifex duo is as you might expect, a combination of just the right amount of precision and drinkability. With this release, Pete is searching for freshness and varietal character - he's nailed it. A great addition to the Spinifex range and yet another feather in Pete's very feathery cap.
What it Tastes Like
Fine structure, freshness and vitality, here. Acidity on point, savoury tannins build through the wine. Raspberry, plums and strings of dried herb on the nose. Tightly wound up and focused but not overly serious. Fresh bitter finish is a lovely note to leave you with. Very tidy wine which feels precise yet easy to enjoy.
This deliciously punchy 100% Tempraniilo '16 is cropped from a single vineyard high in the southern Barossa foothills; hand picked early in the season to capture its lively fruit and freshness, fully destemmed and naturally fermented in a small open fermenter. The wine was matured on its lees for six months prior to bottling without filtration.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.
Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
