This curious little wine is made from a few rows of Furmint grown organically (uncertified) on the Freeman vineyard in the Hilltops of NSW.
Furmint is traditionally made into a sweet Hungarian wine, however here, it takes on the form of a dry table wine. This is naturally fermented and untouched apart from a minimal amount of sulphur at bottling. It’s a tasty, engaging wine brimming with personality and a sense of intriuge.
Few examples of this variety exist in Australia, particularly in this minimalistic style. A great way to get acquainted with a lesser known variety and loads of fun at your next options night.
What It Tastes Like
Funky nose but it’s not in your face. Plays in the tropical fruit spectrum: pineapples, honey, nuts, shredded wheat and a kind of flor-like aroma but more restrained. A tiny light spritz on opening counterbalanced by some chewy phenolics. Cool wine. A surprise packet and a unique talking point.

Picked March 15. Thirty hours of skin contact. Pressed off and fermented in a mix of stainless steel and ceramic egg. Racked to tank for aging on gross lees. Minimal Sulphur dioxide (less than 10ppm) the only addition. 13.5% alc, 8 std drinks.

This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long.
