- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Sons of Eden Freya Riesling is Eden Valley Riesling in its purest form. No mucking around, just gorgeously pure, free-run Riesling juice from what winemaker Corey Ryan dubs “A near perfect ripening season.”
It comes from three different Eden Valley vineyards - all hand-picked and gently whole bunch pressed - before chilling out in stainless steel until release.
The 2016 is a little riper than previous releases, the fruit a little juicier, making it all the more approachable as a young wine. Again, it must rank amongst the country’s top value Rieslings.
Great drinking now and will develop beautifully in the cellar also.
What It Tastes Like
It’s ripe with smells of lemon and Bickfords lime cordial. A little hit of blossomy aromas but powerful ripe fruit as the main theme. It’s succulent to drink. All juicy citrus fruit and long, mouthwatering acidity which closes with a soft powdery tickle. A great drink all round.
**95 points. “From 15-42yo vines on three vineyards in the cooler parts of the Eden Valley, hand-picked, chilled, whole bunch-pressed, cool-fermented, 2 months on lees before bottling. Meyer lemon fruit overshadows (in a good way) the lime-accented fruit on the generous palate. No more could have been done to maximise the high quality fruit. It is full of charm - and flavour.”
- James Halliday (Wow Factor Whites 2017)
A near perfect ripening season punctuated with weeks of warm dry days and typical cool Eden Valley nights lead to a slow but steady flavour development and generous levels of natural acidity.
There are three Eden Valley Riesling Vineyards that contribute to the Freya blend. All are situated within the cooler parts of Eden Valley and have east-west row orientations. The vineyards are all hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and then chilled to a further 6ºC before being processed.
Whole bunch pressed with only the finest pressings being retained. The juice was settled cold and racked clear to begin fermentation. Fermented cool at 12- 14ºC for near 3 weeks before going to dryness. To help build palate texture the wine was held on yeast lees for a further 2 months before being bottled.

About the Producer
Sons of Eden
Sons of Eden is another of the new breed of Barossa labels turning the region on its head, and a partnership between a winemaker (Corey Ryan) and viticulturist (Simon Cowham) who both “learnt and refined their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley”. James Halliday has awarded them his 5 red star rating.
Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
