The quality Nero d’Avola coming from out of McLaren Vale has added another dimension to the thriving red wine scene of this region.
Few winemakers in the area have Alex Sherrah’s experience with the variety. He has been making the Coriole Nero for years, consistently churning one of the best value and high-quality versions in the country.
Alex’s own Sherrah Nero d’Avola is delicious. It hits the Nero brief like a bullseye: medium bodied, brightly fruited, drinking ease at the max. Gary Walsh said it “Drinks like a charm,”. No surprises given Alex’s expertise and familiarity with this charming variety.
What It Tastes Like
“It’s bursting with sweet red fruits, fresh mint, black jelly beans, and dusty cupboards filled with spice and dried herbs, though while it smells like a succulent little sucker, it pulls a little more dry and savoury on its firmly medium bodied palate. It’s dusted with fine chalky tannin, has gentle fresh berried acidity, and finishes perfumed and fresh. Drinks a charm. Like this.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

– Single vineyard owned by the Petruccis, second generation growers specializing in new and interesting varieties.
– Fruit was hand harvested at 12.5 Beaume.
– Gently destemmed using an E1 destemmer where the berries are slowly ‘knocked’ from the stalks to result in whole berries going into the fermenter.
– Berries were cold soaked 3 days prior to ferment beginning naturally as the must warmed up, it was then over seeded with a mixed culture yeast to promote primary fruits.
– 12 day primary ferment was followed by pressing to seasoned French oak hogs heads and a Puncheon where malolactic fermentation occurred naturally.
– Aged for 9 months in oak before being bottled with no ning or ltration.
