The higher altitudes and cool growing periods in Orange make for great Sauvignon Blanc in the right spots.
The ‘Lily’ is a great value example of Sauvignon Blanc from the region. Picked from two different sites; one at the lower altitude (740m ASL) providing fruit ripeness and flavour, the second pick (1000m ASL) providing the pristine acidity to keep the wine fresh and crisp.
It’s not a complicated wine but it hits the style bang on. Flavour. Freshness. Drinkability.
Orange Sauvignon Blanc 101.
What It Tastes Like
Whiff of cut grass and passionfruit, some lemon and lime, and a slight nettle note in the fray too. The clean, crisp fruit is the key here. It’s dry but flavoursome and the crystal clear acidity makes the next glass a must.
Sourced from our two vineyards in Orange, this Sauvignon Blanc benefits from the ripeness and tropical notes from our home block at Griffin Rd (740m), and the thirst-slaking acidity generated of our newer vineyard at Wallace Lane (1000m). There is a rare delicacy at play here, and a soft nettly acidity that asks you to revisit for another glass. It is comfortable in its own skin, and is perfectly balanced – two confident attributes that continue the proud legacy of our ‘Lily’. Wild yeast fermentation adds colour and smoky complexity to this young wine.

About the Producer
Ross Hill wines is one of the jewels in the crown for Orange. Winemakers Phil and Rochelle Kerney were nominated last year as a finalist for the prestigious Gourmet Wine Traveller Winemaker of the year. They narrowly missed out on the top gong, but the quality of their estate grown cool climate wines are second to none in the area. Their methodology is “based on old-world techniques executed with modern quality control and precision”, and their wines are well worth seeking out.
The wine scene in Orange is alive and kicking. With each vintage that passes the bar of quality is raised again and again. Pinot Noir is a potential champion for the region but for now Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet are the flag bearers. The cool climate and the high altitude vineyards are producing wines of finesse and class and there is some ripping value to be had in this region.
