- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Ravensworth Shiraz Viognier has become one of the most sought after wines in Canberra, owner/winemaker Bryan Martin now consistently producing a wine of glorious complexity from his home grown fruit.
Bryan’s Shiraz is Northern Rhone Valley inspired, with a splash of co-fermented Viognier adding perfume and mouthfeel to what is a remarkable Shiraz. Given Bryan Martin’s day-job as assistant winemaker at Clonakilla where he, alongside Tim Kirk, produces Australia’s foremost Shiraz Viognier, it comes as no surprise to see this wine reach such great heights.
The 2016 looks sensational once again. As Bryan says, “I was impressed with the texture too, it’s probably not so full of floral perfume - but it’s darker, more brooding than last years.” which is good news for all who’ve tracked this wine’s trajectory. It received 95 points from Mike Bennie, and if you fancy your cool climate Shiraz then this is simply a must for your cellar and/or dinner table. Exceptional value.
What It Tastes Like
“Beautiful, delicious wine this. Silken texture, tightly wound but with a give of mouthwatering fruit flavour and incredible, harem-like perfume of pot pourri, fangipani, red fruits, incense and garam masala spice. That texture, whoa, Canberra District’s greatest ally when shiraz (with or without viognier) is on song – sleek, sheathed in finest lacy tannins, long and so fine. It’s joyous in fruit expression but shows savoury, spicy detail and finishes with a floral, pretty mouth perfume that lingers. So good.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
95 points. “Someone asked me the other day something to the tune of ‘who are the next generation of newer generation producers who will truly create a legacy in Australian wine, not just those in the avant garde creating waves now, but making wines and wine styles that will sustain and be part of the fabric of ‘fine wine’ culture in Australia’s future’, or something to that thought. I came to a few, Mac Forbes, Luke Lambert, Syrahmi (Adam Foster), Sami-Odi (Fraser McKinley), but it feels only like a handful at present, and sure, there are possibly more to come… but I would put Ravensworth and Bryan Martin firmly in the list. No misses from him. Building a formidable argument to prestige.”

About the Producer
Bryan Martin is a winemaker at the height of his powers. Setting aside the exceptional work he is doing behind the scenes at regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, his Ravensworth wines have become some of the Canberra region’s hottest releases. Bryan’s winemaking style is equal parts science and artistic flair. He’s an adventurous spirit trapped in the body of a technical virtuoso. A concert pianist jamming to free jazz. It’s a killer combination. His range is full of alternative varieties and whacky blends, with texture and balance the key in everything. Truly unique wines from a region on the up and up and some of Canberra’s most sort after wines.
Canberra. A mountain of potential. A sleeping giant of Australian wine. The ability of this region to produce world class wines in only a relatively short history is almost second to none in the whole country. We have some absolute geniuses to thank for developing this region. People have taken notice. Canberra wine is some serious gear. With the ability to produce everything from perfumed and tightly wound Syrah, to razor sharp Riesling and a bunch of emerging varieties in the ground excelling, Canberra will be one of the ‘must watch’ wine producing regions in Australia for many years to come.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
